A Serious Question!

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? (Luke 6:46 NKJV)

When God speaks into your heart while reading His Word, it is amazing. But when God speak a word of rebuke into our heart while reading His word, well then, this is a different matter. The feelings we then have inside us start to spin and stir in a way that we might not experience them on a normal day to day basis.

In this passage from Luke chapter 6, Jesus is stating a serious question to those around Him. “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” This is serious! Jesus is ‘The Lord’ and He should be treated as such. Have I not been giving Jesus the full honor due Him? Is this why God brought this to my attention?

What is this word ‘Lord’ mean? Am I just not understanding the true meaning of the word?

What is Jesus asking me?

Jesus is asking why I call Him my Lord (master over my life) with my lips but with my actions and words and deeds I call Him simply my friend and savior? He is saying, “You call me your master, and I really should be, but you act like I’m just person who did you a great favor. Like I’m just a friend of sorts. Why is that? Do you not truly understand just Who I AM?

Jesus is our friend

John 15:13 says, ‘Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.’

But He then tells us what being His friend means in the very next verse.

John 15:14, ‘You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.’

He says “You want to be my friend? Then accept Me as your Lord!” My friends do as I say, because they respect me as who I truly am… the great I AM!

So why don’t we?

So why do we say and sing “I am a friend of God” and then walk out and …”not do what I say”? I live for me, for my selfish ways. For what makes me feel good when in fact I should be denying myself so that I can pick up my cross and follow my friend Jesus!

“That which I do …”

I devote a lot of my time and resources to the ministry God has put into my trust. To feed and give aid to the homeless and those who are barely surviving in life. Living from paycheck to paycheck. Knowing that they are truly only one missed payment or check from becoming homeless. But am I doing His will in every aspect of this? Am I truly submitting my life to His will and want for my life? Is what I’m doing for His pleasure and glory? Or is it for mine? Is it truly, all of Him and None of Me? Is Jesus the “Lord” over my life? I mean have I given up all that I am in order to serve Him?

“Well He is my ‘Savior’, so at least I’m going to heaven right?

Jesus says in Matthew 7:22-23 “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

If Jesus is not Lord over my life then I am. And if I am lord over my life then surly I ‘practice lawlessness’ because on my own, I will sin. I will look to myself and what I want out of life rather than what God’s will is for me.

If Jesus is not Lord over my life how can He take care of me?

Jesus told Peter in John 13:8b, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

Jesus needed to wash Peter, to make him clean for what was to come. As our Lord, God has the job of taking care of us. It’s His job to feed us, clothe us, shelter us, and provide for us all that we could ever need. And honestly, who could ever do a better job at that than God Himself?

Jesus needs to be #1 in my Whole life! Not just on Saturdays when I’m out feeding and preaching to the homeless. Not just on Sunday’s when I’m at church singing and praising His name with the crowd around me. He needs to be my ‘Everything all the time!

I need to deny my flesh what it is craving; selfish honor, pride full ways, fleshly desires, lust for money and stuff, things of comfort, and just live for my LORD!

If we listen…

If I listen to the One who gave up everything to purchase our freedom from death and sin, and in so doing, bought me! Then I make Him

Over My life, choosing to allow God to say what I need and what I am to do.

My real B.F.F. who always has my best interest at heart, desiring for me to be the best at everything He has for me to do for His Kingdom!

My great redeemer of my soul. Granting me eternal life with Him in heaven where I will worship and praise His glorious name! All Glory and Honor and Praise be to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Forevermore.

It is from this place I enjoy the Peace, Love, and Happiness that only my LORD can provide.
